Thu is thrilled to return to The Vi at Palo Alto on Friday, August 7, 3:30-4:30pm, with a special program entitled "The Legacy of Nancy Wilson"!  The afternoon will celebrate the elegance and soulfulness of one of jazz's most beloved vocalists, featuring standards and ballads from Nancy Wilson's songbook.  The Vi at Palo Alto is a beautiful Life Plan community set on 23 lush acres of Stanford property in the heart of Silicon Valley. Known for its vibrant lecture and performance series, The Vi brings together a community of curious, engaged residents who love great live music as much as great conversation. This time, Thu will be performing as a trio with two extraordinary musicians, including a very special guest joining us all the way from Los Angeles.

Aimee Nolte — Piano (Special Guest, Los Angeles). Aimee Nolte is a Los Angeles-based jazz pianist, vocalist, and educator whose "Aimee Nolte Music" YouTube channel has grown to over 300,000 subscribers, with an additional 248,000 followers on Instagram. She earned her jazz piano degree from Brigham Young University in 1998 and has performed alongside jazz greats including John Clayton, Larry Goldings, Jacob Collier, and Nicki Parrott. She has released four full-length albums and an EP, with her work praised in Downbeat as capturing a beautiful, reflective quality. Beyond the stage, she's become one of the most beloved voices in online jazz education, known for making complex music theory accessible to a massive global audience. We're honored to have her join us for this intimate afternoon performance.

Aaron Germain — Upright Bass. Aaron Germain has lived and performed in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2000, splitting his career between work as a sought-after sideman and his own compositions as a bandleader. Equally adept on electric and upright bass, his playing has been described as relaxed, confident, and unpretentious, always serving exactly what the music asks of it. He has released four albums as a leader, and his 2010 debut Before You Go was singled out by Bass Player Magazine for its rich, warm acoustic tone and equally tasteful command of the electric bass.

Ollie Dudek — Upright Bass. Ollie Dudek is a San Francisco Bay Area native and a second-generation jazz bassist.  He holds a BA in Jazz Studies from the California Jazz Conservatory and has studied and performed in New Orleans, New York, Cuba, and Brazil. As leader of the Scenic Route Trio, he produced and composed the group's debut album Flight of Life, and his playing has been praised by jazz critic Scott Yanow as that of a gifted young player.

Having trained in Jazz, Broadway, Classical, and R&B music, Thu's voice is imbued with a unique blend of power, clarity, richness, depth, and warmth. She has performed throughout California, in New York and Nashville, and internationally, including the historic Birdland Jazz Club, Pangea NYC, Williamsburg Music Center, Dzalbay Cantina (Mexico), NAMM, Rudy’s Jazz Room, House of Blues San Diego, the Golden Gate Park Bandshell, Humphreys Backstage Live, Black Cat, and SFJAZZ Center. Thu has worked with ensembles led by the great Victor Wooten and the Wooten Brothers, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Joe Lovano, legendary drummer Akira Tana, and Jazz Mafia. She was the featured vocalist for SFJAZZ Monday Night Band and performed in SFJAZZ Miner Auditorium from 2017-2020. Her lyrical phrasing and velvety timbre are celebrated in albums recorded with renowned Vietnamese composer Hoàng Quốc Bảo ("Khúc Vô Thanh") and with master horn player Noel Jewkes ("Thu Ho with the Noel Jewkes Trio").

Known for her rich, emotive vocals and deep connection to jazz tradition, Thu has regularly graced the stage with the great Yancie Taylor and his ensemble, captivating audiences with performances that blend classic standards with modern nuance. Through her artistry and community engagement, Thu endeavors to highlight and celebrate Oakland’s vibrant jazz heritage.
